South Carolina's Coalition for Mathematics and Science

S²TEM Centers SC is an innovation partnership managed by South Carolina’s Coalition for Mathematics & Science. Its purposes are to improve instruction and accelerate student learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics content areas through innovation, support and research.

Lesson: Animal Structures for Survival

Standards: SC 6-3.2

Disciplinary Literacy Strategies: Frayer Model, Gallery Walk


In this lesson, students will apply prior knowledge about the characteristics of various animal groups to explain how different animals use their body structures to defend themselves, obtain food, and move.


Time Required: One 50-minute Class Period

Disciplinary Vocabulary: amphibian, reptile, birds, fish, mammals, echinoderms, segmented worms, arthropods, mollusks, sponges
