Email: lalvarez @s2temsc. org
Liz Alvarez joined S²TEM Centers SC in 2019 as an Education Specialist for the Upcountry region. In this role, she supports teacher growth through coaching and delivering customized professional development for teachers in South Carolina.
Prior to joining S²TEM Centers SC, Liz was a high school math teacher. She has worked in schools throughout South and North Carolina, teaching every math class from 7th grade math to AP Calculus BC. At the beginning of her teaching career, she was selected as a teaching fellow for the Knowles Teacher Initiative and is now a senior fellow. During her time with Knowles, she worked with other educators to create and provide engineering professional development to school districts across the country. She has also trained and served as a cognitive coach.
Liz has always enjoyed discovering connections between science and math and being able to show those connections to her students has been an important part of her identity as an educator. She has been fortunate in her own professional development experiences, from studying biodiversity in Mexico to installing particle detectors in the ice at the South Pole. These experiences have strengthened her own understandings and have been instrumental in allowing her to show her students the connections between what they're learning and how it's used in a variety of contexts.
Liz earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.A.T in Mathematics from the University of South Carolina.
