Kenna Alewine, Education Specialist

Kenna Alewine joined S²TEM Centers SC as an Education Specialist in July of 2008. Her present work strongly supports the areas of standards-based instruction that incorporates disciplinary literacy, STEM assessment, and blended learning. She provides support and resources to all levels of educators as they transition from traditional, teacher-centered instruction, to creating authentic, student-centered learning.

Before joining S²TEM Centers SC, Kenna began her education career as a band director in the Carolinas. She expanded her certification to include K-8 education and developed a love for mathematics while teaching in Lexington School District One. In 2004, Kenna received training and support from S²TEM Centers SC staff when she moved from the classroom to become a middle level mathematics coach. In this role, she created district-wide professional development sessions and became a professional growth coach to both teachers and administrators.

New learning is important to Kenna and she strives to stay in tune with current educational trends. Her recent focus for new learning is the integration of STEM and the Arts, and the use of digital content in a blended learning environment.

Kenna earned a B.A. in Music Education from Limestone College and is highly qualified in elementary education, middle level mathematics, instrumental, choral, and piano music, and is endorsed as a gifted and talented educator.  Kenna was selected to attend the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) Teacher Educator Institute at the Museum of Science in Boston, Massachusetts and is now an active facilitator of the EiE Professional Development Community for workshops within South Carolina.
