Lesson 4:1:  Introduction - What is Productive Dialogue?

Task 1:  Productive Dialogue in Mathematics

Read the NCTM Research Brief on discussion in mathematics class.  As you read, underline key concepts and key ideas that help you answer the question:  “What is productive dialogue?”

 Task 2:  Productive Dialogue in Science

Read section 1 (pages 1-4) of TERC’s Talk Science Primer on productive talk in science class.  As you read, underline key concepts and key ideas that help you answer the question:  “What is productive dialogue?”

Task 3: Disciplinary Literacy Strategy--Graphic Organizer

One type of graphic organizer often used to compare and contrast ideas is a double bubble map like this one:

Other graphic organizers that are designed for compare and contrast are the Venn diagram and the t-chart.  Select one of these graphic organizers or another of your own to compare and contrast productive dialogue in mathematics and productive dialogue in science.
